Piet Perfection

Who is Piet Mondrian? For those of you who don't know, he is a Dutch abstract painter from the 20th Century who produced famous paintings such as the one below:

His paintings might have been produced more than 80 years ago, but that doesn't stop designers from using them as inspiration for their clothes and home accessories.

At Fashion Week in Australia this year, Tina Kalivas' runway models strutted their stuff in shirts and dresses that gave off a Mondrian vibe. She used bold colors in geometric patterns just as Mondrian did and when paired with black, this look is sharp and a definite show stopper!

Geometric Interface FLOR tiles lay on the ground, while the paint on the wall was used to create a Piet look a like

This bronze tower floor lamp from Lamps Plus is a geometric genius design!

Here we have a wall sconce from CB2

With these mondrian mimics, you don't just get a piece of furniture or a home accessory, it's almost like you get a little piece of art also! These simple pieces all make big statements without being too embellished or ornate. They almost make me want to throw away all of my floral fabric and traditional furniture and start all over with a fresh modern look..well, maybe in my next life!

X-cellent Apartment Style

So every month we decided to feature the Interior Design of a movie set that catches our eye. This month it is the almost out on video, The Nanny Diaries. I must say, I loved the book; however, I hear the movie doesn't quite live up to the book's potential.

I am anxiously awaiting its arrival at Blockbuster, purely for the set design- we hear that it's fantastic! (All 12 rooms and 5 baths of it!)

Andrew Basemen (the set designer) did an incredible job in making the X's apartment look traditional, classy, "old money", and especially a reflection of their personalities.

Some of you might have already seen Mr. and Mrs. X's traditional Manhattan apartment on the big screen, but for those of you who haven't, here is a sneak preview:

Can you believe Mrs. X's closet? All of those designer shoes perfectly organized and don't forget that gorgeous vanity!

Laura Linney (playing Mrs. X)- we love all of the cool blue hues in her bedroom

Tranquil and traditional Guest Room

Ironic how they have such a large kitchen, but I can't imagine Mrs. X cooking a thing!

Andrew (the set designer) told Shelterrific.com, he acted counterintuitively, creating a room "as uncomfortable for kids as possible, which is the opposite I do for my clients"

Son's Bedroom

Clean and contemporary furniture coupled with traditional accessories make this living room chic and fabulous

Entry Hall- everything is perfectly symmetrical and rightfully in its place- shows Mrs. X's strict personality

Exterior Elevator Hall- Can you believe that table was only $100 and the glass bird lamps were only $65 each?

We love the cream on cream palette of this dressing room
Traditional Home actually had a contest when the movie first came out where you could win the Henredon furniture from the set! Too bad we got word of this 6 months later..

All I have to say is that as cold and cruel as Mrs. X was in the book, I have to admit, she does have fabulous taste!

Artist Anne

Anne Harwell's, "Annechovie" Art series is the cutest! She sketches and renders rooms, furniture, and home accessories. Her prices are incredibly reasonable too!

We love her colorful artwork. You can even commission her to do custom pieces of your favorite things! She is also now selling Holiday cards...adorable!

LOST...AND FOUND

This past weekend I discovered two fabulous antique stores off of Industrial. One is called LOST and then right next to it you have the other one called FOUND. It's too cute! They have some great shabby chic decor- you will absolutely fall in love with their pieces.

Quatrefoil Mirror

When you step outside the glass doors into their "outdoor shopping area", you would have sworn you just arrived at an overpriced junk yard...but that's the beauty of it! Everything looks old, worn, and beat up- but that's why we love shabby chic!

Modern bench....can't tell you how much I love tufting. Half of the furniture on this page is tufted...I'm obsessed!

I love all of their bright painted furniture

Tufted settee in turqoise silk- can't get any better than this!

This chest is shabby chic and has mirrors on both sides- genius! Not to mention those adorable crystal knobs.

What better way to spice up your home than with an old antique sofa upholstered in a wild, fun, trendy fabric!

I LOVE this purple chair. So elegant and girly

Modern lucite coffee table with really cool lamps
